Cirsium brevicaule

The secret of Tokunoshima, the island of fertility and longevity, is in fact the Amami Shima Azami.

Amami Shima Azami is a perennial plant of the Cirsium genus of the Asteraceae family. Dr. Torao Tokuda, founder of the Tokushukai Hospital Group, was the first to take notice of this Shima Azami, and he began functional research in collaboration with universities. As a result, it was found to contain a large amount of various polyphenols, including pectolinarin, which has antiviral activity and strong antioxidant properties. There is also evidence that it inhibits fatty acid synthesis and prevents fatty liver.

In addition to being used as food in tempura and tsukudani, Shima Azami is highly valued and used as an ingredient in green juice and various supplements such as tablets and capsules.
